Importance of Estate Planning
Estate planning is not only for the super-rich. Everyone, regardless of age or wealth, needs to have good estate planning documents in place. Consider these few questions: Who would you want to take care of your minor children if something were to happen to you and your spouse? Who would you want to make healthcare and financial decisions for you if you became incapacitated?
Without estate planning, these decisions will be left up to the Probate Court to decide. Involving the Probate Court will cost your family members time and money.
A Last Will and Testament is likely the most common estate planning document, but it is not the only helpful document. Other good estate planning documents can include a Living or Revocable Trust, a Durable Power of Attorney and a Healthcare Power of Attorney.
If you already have these Estate Planning documents, please review them every few years to see if any changes need to be made. Has anything changed since you created these documents? Have family members moved away? Have you remarried? Maybe you've had a few more children.
